Weekend Update

Mia had such a nice weekend!  I took her on a walk, and she was so good.  We passed by a bunch of people and she only barked once at runners - who were sort of weird.  They were running like full speed down a hill wearing tons of crazy reflective gear and hats and stuff, so yeah it looked a little strange to me too.  We went to the park on Saturday and Sunday and she played very nicely the whole time.  Everyone is getting to know who Mia is at the park!  On Saturday she was the dog humping all the other dogs, but on Sunday she didn't do it even once and there was another female dog there (who looked a lot like Mia) that was humping everyone and everything so it made me feel a little better.  Her birthday is just in a few days (1 year!).

Mia's boyfriend

Mia's new boyfriend!  They met at the park and it was love at first sight.  She humped him all over the place, he just stood there and took it.  Later they nuzzled and made out like teenagers.  I don't even know his name...

Photo update

Because it's been a while since I've posted any photos of Mia.

What is that blur in the middle of the office?  It's Mia chasing her tail at a million miles an hour - she still does that.

And this is just her precious face looking all pretty.

Not Normal

Mia now likes to walk backwards in areas of the house that scare her... and it's not all the time, it's just like sometimes.  For example, this morning I was making coffee and she walked from the island in the kitchen through the family room backwards about 10 steps as she looked around all suspiciously.  Last night, she was able to walk in there without any issues at all.

She's still refusing to walk down the hallway to the garage.  Sometimes we force her, sometimes we use the front door instead.  Sometimes she actually walks out of the deck door backwards in order to go outside to use the bathroom... but then other times she walks right out fine.

Nothing has ever happened to her in this house.  We hardly ever yell at her, we've never even jokingly thrown anything at her or like anything mean so why is she acting so traumatized?  This has been going on since early December (and maybe even getting worse) and it's just really bizarre.  I read about a few other dogs having this issue online but nobody really seemed to have a logical answer.

Thoughts?

Feed Me

When we got Mia, the rescue group said she was around 7.5 - 8 months in September.  Back then she weighed around 45 pounds and were told she could gain another 10 pounds more or less.  She's closing in on a year old now and she's only 46-47 pounds, but may be slightly taller.  We are sort of thinking that she may have been older than we thought when we first got her.  Is her growth stunted?  Is she as big as she's going to get?  We started feeding her extra food this week, and this is on top of the extra food we started feeding her back in November but she is still very lean.  She's now eating 1.5 cups of dry food with 1/2 cup of wet food mixed in.  It's like gourmet, I'm telling you... all dogs would be jealous of her dinners.  We also still give her peanut butter filled kongs but not as often as before, and she does get treats everyday at daycare and at home.  She apparently burns a lot of calories still...

Twins!

Mia met her twin today!  Sure she's black but they are like almost identical.  They both have white accent with the t-shirt and the tiny paws, and a tiny bit of white tipped tail.  This dog also has a bit of a white paint drop on her head.  They are both from Tennessee rescue groups, and the only real difference is their color and this one is about 19 months vs. Mia's 11 months.  Twins!

Look at the way they both carry their tails when playing!  They had so many of the same mannerisms.  The two of them love to stalk other dogs by laying low to the ground, tippy toeing, and then pouncing on them.  This other dog couldn't really jump very high, and that's one of Mia's specialties.  The black dog owners were told that their dog was boarder collie and hound - which is not at all what we were told Mia is...

It's really interesting meeting other dog owners at the park!  I'm totally the crazy one running around chasing Mia when she's acting up (which was a lot today) and yelling at her.  Most of the other people today were sitting around on benches but I have to keep an eye on her especially today since there were three kids in the park and Mia decided to jump on ALL of them.  It was totally embarrassing.  Then she decided to go around and hump at least 3 other dogs.  That was mortifying.  Just another Saturday at the park...

Mia's BFF

With her favorite thing on the planet - the marrow bone.

Marrow Bone Experiment

Mia got her very first marrow bone tonight from the grocery store.  It's 5 inches of raw, slightly meaty, marrow filled goodness and she's eating it under the dining room table as though we're going to steal it away from her.  She's in doggie heaven.  Someone I work with told me that when she needs like 1.5 hours of silence from her dog she does this and I didn't really believe that it would work with Mia but I just had to know.  The woman was right, this is perhaps the best dog sitter there is even more than her peanut butter kong which gets demolished with her extra long tongue in 20 minutes.

New things from Mia this week:

She's learned how to stalk her prey in a playful manner.  She flattens herself low to the ground (even her head and ears), sneaks up on an unsuspecting dog, and then quickly and quietly runs and pounces right in front of them.  It's the cutest thing, and the other dogs love it.

We got Pet Rider seat covers for the cars.  Previously, we were using beach towels which work fine but sometimes she messes them up to make the perfect bed.  They are kind of cheap and there is probably a better quality product out there, but these do the trick just fine keeping your back seat clean (they are waterproof) and hair free.  Mia doesn't seem to mind them either.

Sometimes if we're home we'll let her come into the bed after she's used the bathroom and eaten breakfast for a 15 minute snooze.  She loves this and basically pushes us out of the bed - this is also why she can't ever sleep there during the night.  It's a bad habit for sure, but it can't be a daily thing since we're up and going so early in the morning during the work week.
